(Fast rising indigenous language rapper, CDQ has explained why he didn’t end up joining Davido’s HKN Gang. Photo: Emily Nkanga)

If things had happened differently, rising indigenous language rapper, CDQ would be a member of the Davido-led HKN Gang by now. Unfortunately, he’s inked a deal with another record label by the time the offer from Davido’s label would come.

CDQ was a guest on HipTV‘s Next Rated recently and he explained how it all happened.

According to him: ‘I got a text from Davido one morning, and he was like we should have a meeting. So we set it up and he wanted me to join HKN gang but unfortunately, I already signed to General Records owned by Masterkraft so we couldn’t make it happen.’

But for CDQ, just the fact that the possibility of joining the HKN Gang came his way is a delight.

‘I still look back to that period as one of the biggest surprises of my career because I didn’t expect it.’

CDQ inked a deal General Records in 2013 and together they’ve made a number of popular songs including the hit, ‘Indomie‘ featuring Olamide which also has Davido on the remix.

One category which however interests music fans is the Best Street Hop which appears to be one of the tightest category.

Olamide leads the category with his May 2015 hit single, Bobo while Reminisce’s Skilashi, Hello Bae by Falz featuring Yemi Alade and Masterkraft’s Indomie featuring Olamide, CDQ and Davido also makes the category. The surprise addition however is Pasuma’s protégée, Small Doctor whose popular track Mosquito Killer completes the list.

Fast rising street hop act, Small Doctor has grabbed his first Headies nomination since venturing into the music industry. The Mosquito singer, who is veteran fuji musician, Pasuma’s protégé got nominated in the Best Street Hop Category but will be facing a tough challenge to grab his first win at the prestigious award.

The self-acclaimed ‘Akeweje Oganla’ battles Olamide (Bobo), Reminisce (Skilashi), Falz (Ello Bae) as well as as Masterkraft’s Indomie which features Olamide, CDQ and Davido.

The Best Street Hop Artiste is a voting category for the artiste whose songs are inspired by the streets. Such song should have street lingua, which may also be originated by the artiste and popular on the street.’
